NEXT CLASS starts October 23, meeting Tuesdays and Thursdays at 1500 W Broadway Suite D, Missoula from 7 – 8:30 PM
Community Reinforcement Approach and Family Training (CRAFT) is an evidence-based intervention designed to help concerned significant others (CSOs) reaffirm relationships with people who use substances. CSOs inherently play a powerful role in engaging a person who uses. Talking to a loved individual who uses substances can be difficult, especially if they are not ready to curb their use. CSOs who attend the CRAFT program learn skills to take care of their own self and decrease anxiety and anger, even if their loved one ultimately does not enter treatment.
CRAFT, grounded in positivity and optimism, is a culturally sensitive program that complements a client’s customs and beliefs. Through lectures, open-ended discussions, and break-out activity sessions, the program teaches skills to cope with existing problems and the context in which substance abusing behavior occurs. CSOs will learn how to use positive reinforces (rewards) and how to let a substance user suffer natural consequences for their using behavior. Ultimately, CSOs will hone skills to improve their own health while staying loving, kind, and committed to a person using.
For any concerned family member or friend! CSOs generally know a person’s behavior patterns better than others. CRAFT teaches the CSO how to use this information in a motivational way to improve their relationship with a person who uses, which in turn increases the chance that the person using enters treatment. Research studies of CRAFT’s effectiveness have shown that seven out of ten people who complete the curriculum successfully encourage their substance user to attend treatment. CRAFT’s philosophy has been shown to be equally effective with Hispanic and Anglo families.
Each curriculum will consist of 12, 1 ½ hour sessions. Listed below are the next class’ details:
